Washington D.C.'S First Female Television News Anchor Celebrates 40 Years on the Air
Forty years ago JC Hayward arrived in Washington, DC and landed a coveted position at WUSA-TV, Channel 9. As the 1st female news anchor in our nation's capital JC remains a constant in an industry where change is commonplace.
WASHINGTON, DC, February 19, 2012 /AE PR News/ -- In 1972 MASH premiered on CBS, Carole King sang "You've Got a Friend," e-mail was invented and Chinese Panda's were first introduced at the Washington Zoo. It was also the year that local television icon JC Hayward made her debut as the first female news anchor in Washington D.C.
Forty years later, JC is one of only two women in America who have remained at a single television station for four decades. Longevity doesn't begin to describe JC though; her reporting and journalistic dedication has made her a multiple Emmy award winner, a medalist in the International Film Festival of New York, a Hall of Fame inductee in the National Association of Black Journalists, and Washingtonian of the Year.
WUSA 9News President and General Manager Allan Horlick says that it is no surprise that JC Hayward is consistently rated one of the top news people in Washington D.C. journalism; "from award-winning documentaries to interviews with Nancy Reagan, Maya Angelou, Luciano Pavarotti, Nelson Mandela and Whitney Houston her journalistic work has made JC Hayward the standard for Washington journalism." In 2006 JC added another responsibility to her on-air duties when she was named WUSA's Vice President for Media Outreach. In addition to acting as the liaison to the metro Washington community JC has received two honorary doctorate degrees from both Howard University and Southeastern University.
