So says Giana Rosetti, an electrical engineer who's written a book entitled "Numerology for Pets." Her advice: don't name your pet right away.
"Wait about two weeks or so without naming him. Look at the pet. Think about a name, keep calling him and see how he's reacting, his behavior toward the name. If you are not satisfied, change the name.
Any scientist can tell you that in terms of human language, the first vowel is the most important sound for animals. You learn their behavior with the first vowel of their names, and you learn their reaction, which is the sum of all the vowels of their names," Giana said.
Giana, who calls herself "The Pet Engineer," hosts an internet radio show about pets and people helping each other and the latest in the pet industry. She uses her once aloof cat as an example of how a name can change behavior.
"I changed it from Mitchell to Michu, putting my emphasis on the letter "I"... Mi-chu, instead of Mitchell. Then he changed his behavior," Giana said.
