Candia Atwater-Shields, licensed attorney, advocates for the children of the Virgin Islands and promotes the arts and artists of the Caribbean

KINGSHILL, ST. CROIX, US. VIRGIN ISLANDS, December 29, 2011 /AE PR News/ -- Candia Atwater-Shields, Founder of the Carribean Museum Center for the Arts, Inc. and Assistant Attorney General for the United States Virgin Islands, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in her careers.

In 1992, Ms. Atwater-Shields founded the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, Inc., an organization which promotes the arts and artists of the Caribbean. The center, which is located in Frederiksted on the island of St. Croix, provides educational programs, free seminars, and instructional art workshops. It also showcases accomplished local artists and offers opportunities for learning and connection with the cultures of the Caribbean. The Museum Center also attracts international artists and is able to host them as Artists in Residence on site. The Museum Center has 2 apartments for visiting artists. They do community out-reach and either exhbiit or teach youth to prepare works of art to display at CMCA. Ms. Atwater-Shields handles fundraising and grant writing for the museum. Her further responsibilites include overseeing the volunteers and staff, working with design contractors, and publishing an annual fine arts calendar.

Additionally, Ms. Atwater-Shields serves as an assistant attorney general for the United States Virgin Islands. Specializing in family law, she respresents the best interests of children and deals with sometimes conflicted parents. She handles cases on St. Croix, conducts hearings and interviews, and works with administration hearing officers, Superior Court judges, office managers and staff. Ms. Atwater-Shields attributes her success to her family and background; she was taught to leave the world a better place than she found it. She also credits having passionate role models, learning from her mistakes and always pushing ahead.

In 1977, Ms. Atwater-Shields earned a bachelor's degree from SUNY College at Old Westbury, where she studied politics, economics and society, women's studies and American studies. She went on to study international law and land use development at the London School of Economics and attended Hofstra Law School for 2 years. A licensed attorney, she completed a clerkship for Wong and Chew Law Offices in 1984. Her professional affiliations include the New York State Bar Association and Virgin Islands Bar Association. In the years to come, Ms. Atwater-Shields hopes to see major changes in the family law system; she plans to work with legislators to pass legislation creating a more concerned and involved community support group.
